WORK TYPE: Contest Submission
SHIRT DESIGN SPECS: 8.5 '' x 11 ''
YEAR: 2025
This was a custom t-shirt design that I made for an Earth Day contest my university held in 2025 to promote renewable energy and sustainability. The theme was renewable energy and submissions had to include the text “Our Power, Our Planet” with also “Earth Day April 22, 2025”.
The design features custom handwritten type that I wrote myself and a three-panel illustration representing wind, geothermal, and solar energy.
Each panel symbolizes a different form of clean power. The following are:
Wind turbines that harnesses kinetic energy to generate electricity.
Geothermal power plants that uses heat from the Earth to generate steam that then makes electricity.
Solar panels that converts sunlight into electricity.
I designed the t-shirt to be simple and legible. I added a bold emphasis on its text and imagery through the usage of color, texture, and type weight to create a naturalistic look that is relevant to the theme of the shirt.
The illustrations were done by me using 3D models in Blender and rendering them as white silhouettes. Additional work was done in Photoshop to composite the images together in a panel formation. I applied it a masking texture that gives it a grungy and earthly look to accommodate the handwritten text. As for the colors, I kept it simple down to simple paint swatches that has uneven lines, edges, chipping, and scuffs. The design fits well with either a white or black shirt.
Unfortunately, despite my efforts, I did not win the contest. These were the winners. But I am putting this project up anyways to showcase my design process. See below for the ideation behind this t-shirt design.
